Opportunity Information: Apply for PDS BUJUMBURA FY25 02
The Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) 2025 is a competitive grant opportunity offered by the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura for alumni of U.S. government-funded or U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs. The fund is designed to help exchange alumni build on the skills, networks, and experience they gained during their U.S.-supported exchange and turn them into practical, alumni-led projects that address real community challenges. AEIF has been running globally since 2011 and has supported nearly 500 alumni-driven projects worldwide, with the Burundi competition focusing specifically on projects that deliver public service impact in Burundi.
For 2025, the Embassy is looking for proposals that clearly align with one or more of three stated themes tied to U.S. priorities in Burundi. The first theme, "Invest in People," focuses on strengthening Burundian systems for health and education. The second, "Invest in the Economy," supports efforts that help create a stronger foundation for economic growth in Burundi. The third, "Invest in Society and the Region," targets initiatives that contribute to Burundi being peaceful, open, and stable domestically and within the region. Projects that do not directly address these themes as outlined are considered ineligible, so alignment with the stated goals is a central requirement rather than a suggestion.
Applications must be submitted by teams of at least two exchange alumni, and the project must be proposed and managed by alumni. Teams can include alumni from different U.S. exchange programs and may even include alumni from different countries, as long as eligibility rules are met. A key restriction is that U.S. citizen alumni cannot be the applicants or submit proposals, although they are allowed to participate as team members. Only exchange alumni or alumni associations of U.S. government exchange alumni are eligible to apply; other organizations cannot apply on their own. That said, alumni teams are allowed to partner with nonprofits, NGOs, think tanks, and academic institutions to help implement activities, and the award can be issued either to the alumni association/organization or to the partner organization, depending on how the project is structured.
Funding is expected to support a small number of awards, with up to two grants anticipated. Individual award sizes range from USD 5,000 to USD 35,000, with total funding dependent on the availability of funds. Projects are expected to run for 6 to 12 months and must be completed in one year or less. The anticipated program start date is June 2025. The funding instrument may take the form of a grant, a fixed amount award (FAA), or a cooperative agreement. If a cooperative agreement (or certain FAAs) is used, Embassy or bureau staff may be more actively involved in implementation through what is described as "substantial involvement," which generally means closer coordination, monitoring, or collaboration during the project period compared to a standard grant.
For submission, exchange alumni interested in participating are instructed to email proposals to BurundiPublicDiplomacy@state.gov. The narrative text notes a proposal submission date of February 15, 2025, while the opportunity record also lists an original closing date of March 15, 2025, so applicants should treat the earlier Embassy instruction as the practical internal deadline unless clarified directly by the Embassy. The opportunity is listed under Funding Opportunity Number PDS BUJUMBURA FY25 02, administered by the U.S. Mission to Burundi, categorized as discretionary funding, with an award ceiling of USD 35,000 and an expectation of two awards under CFDA 19.022.Apply for PDS BUJUMBURA FY25 02
